(Go West) Sun in wintertime

nittanyliongoing2rozebowlHarrisburg International Airport was busier than usual today as Penn State fans began their journeys westward for the Rose Bowl in Pasedena. Six of seven charter planes left today, according to The Patriot News.

The increased business has slightly cushioned the airport from what will still be a poor year financially. Without the Penn State fans, the airport says the number of holiday travelers would have been down 5-7%. With the Penn State fans, the airport predicts the number of holiday travelers will be down 3-5%.

ABC 27 says that the cost for a spot on one of the Pasedena-bound charter planes is about $2,000, but that seems way too high to me. (FYI: There is a short ad before the segment.)

This morning, ABC 27 ran a feel-good piece about the Penn State fans. (Jeremy Boone’s mom is in it!) FYI, there is an ad before the segment.

I wonder how they got through security without tickets… will Onward State get the same privlege? Someday? Maybe? HIA, if you’re reading, give us a shout-out.

Penn State and the Process of Life

To paraphrase Mark Twain: The reports of higher education’s death have been an exaggeration. American universities produce more research and relevant knowledge for the world at large than any other institutions I know of. Tuition may be too damn high, but over the long-run, undergraduate degrees are definitely worth the cost. But Penn State could be so much more. It used to be, I think.
