Penn State Students to Perform Off-Broadway

At the end of this month, three shows from Penn State’s School of Theatre will be performed Off-Broadway at The York Theatre in New York City. The festival, titled “Penn State at the York,” will take place on Saturday, April 25th starting at 2:00 pm and 8:00 pm, and Sunday, April 26th at 3:00pm.

The featured shows:

  • “Preface,” with music and lyrics by Adam Gwon and directed by Matthew Kaylor Toronto, is a musical about a man who wants to dedicate his latest book to his husband, but his boyfriend might not be as receptive as he had hoped.
  • “Unsung” was directed and conceived by Robert Schneider and choreographed by Jason Sparks. It is a revue of songs that were cut from famous musicals such as Wicked, Guys and Dolls, and West Side Story.
  • “Ecoute: Pieces of Reynaldo Hahn” was written by Dr. Susan Russell and conceived by Dr. Norman Spivey. It is a look at the life and music of the titular French Composer.

These shows were selected from those put on at Penn State’s Cultural Conversations and New Musical Theatre Festival this February and March. Shows chosen to recieve this honor are either new or works in progress and allow students from the School of Theatre to experience working with professional writers, composers, and lyricists as they bring their new work to life on stage.

The York Theatre is located at the corner of Lexington and 54th street in New York City. Tickets are $10 for students and $25 for everyone else. Note: Penn State Live lists the York Theatre website as a location to buy tickets, but I couldn’t find it on their calendar. Your best bet is probably over the phone.
