Happy Valley A Little Less Happy After Arrests

psupot1Four Penn State students were charged yesterday by Attorney General Tom Corbett for their role in “a broad conspiracy to distribute mass quantities of marijuana throughout State College.” The Collegian has the best coverage of the story.

Paul Spara, a World Campus student, was supplying three other students with pot at about $3,000 per pound. (Spara was buying the pot from a guy named Jason Remington, a New Yorker who is not a Penn State student, for about $2,800 per pound.)

According to the Post-Gazette, Spara told a witness he was “majoring in drug dealing.”

In 10 trips dating to 2006, the attorney general’s office said, Mr. Spara received 10 to 50 pounds of pot each week and paid between $2,700 and $2,800 a pound. He then sold it for as much as $3,200 a pound.

My quick math shows that his profit would have been between $40,000 and $250,000.

Spara was charged with:

13 counts of possession with intent to deliver marijuana
2 counts of corrupt organizations
1 cont of criminal conspiracy
1 count of criminal use of a communications facility
1 count of dealing in proceeds of unlawful activities

The three other Penn State students charged are Sanjay Deendyal, Michael Montgomery, and Evan Stiekman. All three of them were charged with:

1 count of possession with intent to deliver marijuana
1 count of criminal conspiracy
1 count of dealing in proceeds of unlawful activities

Deendyal and Stiekman were also each charged with 1 count of criminal use of a communications facility. Both are members of Delta Tau Delta.

Penn State and the Process of Life

To paraphrase Mark Twain: The reports of higher education’s death have been an exaggeration. American universities produce more research and relevant knowledge for the world at large than any other institutions I know of. Tuition may be too damn high, but over the long-run, undergraduate degrees are definitely worth the cost. But Penn State could be so much more. It used to be, I think.
