Complete List of UP Commencement Speakers

Graduation is coming up quickly. Those who are graduating probably already know when and where they can pick up their degrees, so this public service post is meant for those pleasure platitude seekers who have nothing to do after school lets out for summer.

We compiled a bunch of information about each of the graduation ceremonies. If you have any other questions, check out the Penn State Commencement website.

Friday May 15

College of Earth and Mineral Sciences (8:00 pm in the Eisenhower Auditorium)

Speaker: Timothy Killeen, Assistant Director for the Geosciences, National Science Foundation.

College of Engineering (8:00 pm on Friday May 15 in the Bryce Jordan Center)

Speaker: Gregory T. Lucier, Chairman and Chief Technology Officer, Life Technologies.

Saturday May 16

College of Agricultural Sciences (9:00 am in the Eisenhower Auditorium)

Speaker: Robert D. Steele, Dean, College of Agricultural Sciences, The Pennsylvania State University.

Eberly College of Science (9:00 am in the Bryce Jordan Center)

Speakers: Vance and Vincent Moss, Surgeons, Cardiothoracic Surgery and Transplant Surgery, Crozer Chester Medical Center.

College of Arts and Architecture (12:00 pm in the Eisenhower Auditorium)

Speaker: Jessica Weiner, Author, Self-Esteem Expert, Chief Creative Officer, Talk to Jess, LLC.

College of Communications (12:00 pm in the Bryce Jordan Center)

Speaker: Eric W. Rabe, Senior Vice President, Media Relations, Verizon.

College of Information Sciences and Technology (3:00 pm in the Eisenhower Auditorium)

Speaker: Derek Smith, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman, ChoicePoint; Member of the IST Board.

College of Health and Human Development (3:00 pm in the Bryce Jordan Center)

Speaker and Honorary Degree Recipient: George Koob, professor and chair of the Committee on Neurobiology of Addictive Disorders at The Scripps Research Institute will receive a Doctor of Science degree.

College of the Liberal Arts (6:00 pm in the Bryce Jordan Center)

Speaker: Nina Jablonski, Professor and Head, Department of Anthropology, The Pennsylvania State University.

College of Education (6:00 pm in the Eisenhower Auditorium)

Speaker: Sharon P. Robinson, President and Chief Executive Officer for the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE).

Sunday May 17

Smeal College of Business (1:30 pm in the Bryce Jordan Center)

Speaker and Honorary Degree Recipient: Shelly Lazarus, one of the most powerful women in the advertising industry and chairwoman of the world’s sixth-largest advertising agency. Lazarus is Chairwoman of Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide and is the recipient of a Doctor of Humane Letters degree.

The Graduate School (5:00 pm in the Bryce Jordan Center)

Speaker: Bruce A. McPheron, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education; Director of the Pennsylvania Experiment Station; and, incoming Dean, College of Agricultural Sciences, The Pennsylvania State University.

To paraphrase Mark Twain: The reports of higher education’s death have been an exaggeration. American universities produce more research and relevant knowledge for the world at large than any other institutions I know of. Tuition may be too damn high, but over the long-run, undergraduate degrees are definitely worth the cost. But Penn State could be so much more. It used to be, I think.
