Penn State Live Releases iPhone App
In honor of today’s WWDC event, we’re going to throw a little coverage to Penn State Live’s new iPhone app [iTunes link].
Unfortunately, the app is nothing more than a simplified front end for the main website. But at least it’s free!
Using the app, you can browse a list of recent stories. You can also look at recent stories for each of the wires, i.e. Alumni, Research, Sports, etc. However, there is no easy way to look at the archives. The app does not have a search function.
The app looks nice but provides little added value, which leaves us wondering: why didn’t Penn State Live just set up a mobile site accessible to all users?
Because then they wouldn’t have been able to put a snazzy badge on their site.

To paraphrase Mark Twain: The reports of higher education’s death have been an exaggeration. American universities produce more research and relevant knowledge for the world at large than any other institutions I know of. Tuition may be too damn high, but over the long-run, undergraduate degrees are definitely worth the cost. But Penn State could be so much more. It used to be, I think.
