Lulu’s and Tony’s Fight to Stay Open

Tony's Big EasyLast night, popular downtown nightspots Lulu’s and Tony’s reopened after over a month (check out the original Collegian article) of being closed when a Centre County judge reinstated Sammark Inc.’s appeal to the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board regarding the PLCB’s decision not to renew the company’s licenses following repeated liquor law violations.

The legal fight over whether or not Sammark Inc. can keep its establishments open doesn’t only have an effect on the number of options for students to obtain alcohol, but it will have a major effect on the music scene in the town. Tony’s hosts several house DJ’s that bring their own unique flavor to the State College music scene, something that might disappear if the Big Easy were to close.

However, in all likelihood, the DJ’s that perform there and the people who frequent there would move on to another location. It’s unfortunate that Sammark Inc. put itself in its current situation, but in terms of the State College bar scene, Tony’s and Lulu’s absence won’t be missed for very long. In all likelihood, there will be a new establishment in the same location mere months following Sammark Inc. vacating the premises, should they lose their appeal with the Centre County Court of Appeals.

Three Words: For the Glory

When I sat back one night in January thinking about my time at Penn State, I tried to come up with a single word that would adequately describe my experiences here. As I attempted to determine what that magic word might be, my mind began to grasp the absurdity of that challenge. How could I possibly distill four years of my life, countless friendships, and untold numbers of memories, down to a single word? An impossible task to be sure. So instead, I took the easier road and went with three words: For the Glory.
