Last Call…Again

DSC_0277A battle which began in July 2008 will finally come to an end.  The verdict: Tony Sapia, owner of Sammark, Inc., will lose his liquor license. After a drawn out battle of ups and downs that had us all guessing, things are looking bleak for his three bars on Pugh Street: Tony’s Big Easy, Lulu’s Night Spot, and Candy Bar Lounge.

Sapia must sell his liquor license to someone or some company with which he has no connection. In fact, according to the Collegian, the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) is scrubbing its hands Sapia-free.

Now, the court agreement will force the new owners of the liquor license to run a tight ship. The new terms of the agreement prohibit Sapia from owning or working for a liquor licensed premise in State College.

In response to the liquor violations and the fatal stabbing that led to the closings, the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board has set up some strict rules for the next license holders on the property.

  • Drink specials must end at 9 p.m.
  • The sale of alcoholic beverages must end at 1 a.m, and the property must be cleared by 1:30 a.m.
  • 75% of revenue must come from food.

Maybe the Candy Bar Lounge will have to resort to just selling candy now.

A heavily altered set of bars can be expected in the next year under new ownership.
