Fraternity Ordinances Move to Public Hearing

On Monday night, the State College Borough Council voted 4-2 to send 3 ordinances, revolving around Penn State Fraternities, to public hearing on May 3rd. The three ordinances are:

  1. The definition of a fraternity
  2. Banning rooming houses
  3. Temporary use provision (TUP), which allows fraternities that have been disbanded to repopulate their house as a rooming house for two years while the fraternity regroups

Some members of the council voted to send the ordinances back to the State College Planning Commission for further revisions.

When asked about the ordinances, Max Wendkos expressed why he thought they should be brought to a public hearing.

I am in favor of a public hearing for the three ordinances currently being discussed by the Borough Council because this will create a forum for open discussion of the issues between representatives for the fraternity community and local residents. Simply holding the public hearing does not mean I am in favor of enacting the ordinances as they currently stand, though. I just hope that the hearings will create an environment conducive to identifying the areas of the ordinances that may potentially need some work.

The question is, will these ordinances end up acting in favor of  or against the Greek system?
