What’s an Eco-Rep you ask? Penn State has established a new program to further the university’s green initiative. Twenty-eight freshman living in East Halls will be deemed “Eco-Reps.” Theses selected students will attend training and learning sessions throughout the semester on how to live Eco-friendlier lifestyles. For example, to kick off this Fall, the program will focus on electrical energy consumption in residence halls. With their new knowledge base, the Eco-Reps will be expected to pass their incite onto their peers through events, activities, and discussions.

The Eco-Rep program isn’t only about creating a more environmentally conscious student body, but it also has a lot to do with building relationships and opening up communication. A huge part of freshman year is testing the waters and finding your niche in the huge pond that is Penn State. If the goal of the Eco-Rep program excites you, this may be a great way to find that niche.

Program Coordinator Milea Perry explains, “As Eco-Reps, students will work in teams of four to design activities for those in their hall that promote environmentally responsible lifestyles. This opportunity is a great leadership builder and way to develop friendships with classmates.”

The time commitment of an Eco-Rep averages around four hours a week plus a weekly meeting. But if the actions and goals of an Eco-Rep alone don’t entice you, maybe $500 a semester does. Freshman year can often feel overwhelming and adding a part-time job to your schedule may not be in your cards. Becoming an Eco-Rep can give you the money you need for the time you’re willing to spend.

UPUA President, Christian Ragland, has high hopes for Eco-Reps. “I believe it will be successful because not only are they giving first-year students the opportunity to get compensated for a good cause and research, they are also showing first-year students that they are just as important to this university like an upperclassman,” Ragland explained.
