Music Underground Opens Doors

As I have written about before, The Music Underground is taking City Lights Records’ place as THE record store to go to downtown (and with Webster’s future uncertain, possibly the only record store). The Music Underground opened for the first time Arts Fest weekend to allow for a preview of what is to come.

I managed to make my way down there last weekend and the place was packed with music aficionados. It was a good look as to what The Music Underground could be once it is finished. There were people in the corner playing some arcade games (Street Fighter 2 and NBA Jam are worth a mention), shooting pinball and others browsed through the selection of new, used and discounted vinyl records.

I did not purchase anything over Arts Fest but went back at a later date once the initial rush was over. The Music Underground is open for business, but in a much smaller capacity as they are still hoping for construction to be finished in time for the start of the fall semester. I got a chance to speak with Maria Browne and ask her about the future of The Music Underground. She took me to the back room (which is still a work in process) where they are hoping to have a stage for in store concerts. That sounds like a pretty awesome idea in my opinion. The Music Underground is hoping to foster and nurture Penn State’s musicians by giving them a venue to practice their art. Hopefully this will become a hotspot for PSU musicians!

There will also be significantly more room for cd’s, vinyls and other music paraphernalia once the store fully opens up. I would heavily encourage heading on down to check it out. The store has a modest, but great music selection. I look forward to the full opening of The Music Underground as it seeks to change the music scene here at PSU.
