Lions Survive Early Scare in D.C.

Wide Receiver Devon Smith catches a pass on Indiana's Matt Ernest

For most of the third quarter, Penn State’s “White Out at the White House” campaign in Washington D.C.  wasn’t doing too much to actually help on the field. Up only 17-14 at the half against Indiana, a team without a win in the Big Ten, the Lions needed a big play to change the momentum of the game.

I’d say a blocked punt return for a touchdown would qualify.

Tied at 24 with less than two minutes to go in the third quarter, James Van Fleet picked up a blocked punt and returned it 21 yards to give Penn State the lead for good in a 41-24 win.

Matt McGloin bounced back from his rough second half last week to throw for 315 yards and two touchdowns on 22 completions to lead Penn State to their seventh win of the year (7-4 (4-3 Big Ten)).

He was helped offensively by the two-headed monster in the backfield, with both Evan Royster and Silas Redd putting it in the endzone on the ground.

Indiana is now 0-14 all time against Penn State. Penn State has one more regular season game this year, as they are back home in Happy Valley next Saturday  to try to  play spoiler on Michigan State’s Rose Bowl plans.
