Around the Big Ten, Week 13 – Up to the BCS

The three teams at the top of the Big Ten all won this week, which means a three-way tie for the Big Ten title. With one more week still to go in the football season, it now comes down to BCS ratings to determine which team will earn the Big Ten BCS bid. As of this week, it is Wisconsin in the lead with Ohio State in second and Michigan State in third.

Indiana actually wins a game; Purdue goes home in shame.

Quarterback Ben Chappell threw for 330 yards and kicker Mitch Ewald hit a field goal in overtime to give Indiana their first Big Ten victory in about 45 years. Despite the enormous success of a win, Bill Lynch was fired as coach of the Hoosiers. No word yet on whether Purdue will be kicked out of the Big Ten for letting Indiana win a game.

Ohio State shows the nation how to stop Michigan’s offense; wins 37-7.

Ohio State earned their sixth-straight Big Ten title with this rivalry win over Michigan. Rich Rodriguez, coach of Michigan, has now been at the helm for two of the Wolverines’ worst losses to Ohio State, the last being a 42-7 defeat in 2008. Rodriguez could possibly be added to the list of fired coaches, but performance reviews at Michigan do not occur until after the season is over.

Minnesota claims a second scalp and wins a funny trophy against Iowa.

Minnesota won 27-24 over Iowa to take home the Floyd of Rosedale Trophy for the first time in four years. Iowa’s stout defense did not show up for this game, allowing 216 rushing yards. The Hawkeyes were supposed to challenge for a Big Ten championship this year, but they ended their conference schedule at a very regular 4-4.

Wisconsin continues to outscore its basketball team; beats Northwestern for a probable BCS bid.

The Wisconsin basketball team only scored 51 points last weekend, but the football team more than made up for it. The 70-23 victory was Wisconsin’s fourth straight win by at least 20 points. Northwestern never had a chance against the Big Ten’s highest ranked team.
