Shifting Positions in Information Technology

With technology advancing and changing by the millisecond, Information Technology at Penn State is making changes to keep up.

John T. Harwood has recently been appointed Penn State’s new associate vice provost for Information Technology, replacing Jeffrey C. Kuhns, who retired from the position in September. Cole Camplese will take over Harwood’s previous position as senior director for Teaching and Learning with Technology.

Harwood is excited about his new position, where he will focus on strategic planning to help Penn State become more efficient in its use of technology.

“Technology is used in every college, department, and campus of Penn State to do all kinds of great things- research, outreach, service, marketing,” Harwood said.

In his new position, he will be coordinating a University-wide technology assessment. After the assessment, data will be analyzed to figure out how to make improvements.

“I’ll need a double-dose of aspirin; it will be a splitting headache,” Harwood explained, “but I’m very committed.”

Camplese is eager to take on his new role, as well.

“One of my primary goals is to find new ways to engage both students and faculty to better understand what the real needs are and work to address them,” he said. “There are so many opportunities and challenges to address, but that is the reason I am so energized by the change.”

As technology lovers ourselves, Onward State looks forward to seeing what these tech-savvy guys have up their sleeves.
