Crisp Closes: OH SNAP!

Crisp, a salad-and-smoothie restaurant located at 220 E. College Ave., has been shut down following a brief run that saw it debut with a lackluster reception due to its relatively high prices and later, suffered declining revenues to the extent that it was openly subsidized by profits from Access, a clothing store which shared the same owner.

The storefront has come full circle, it seems. For those of you who have been following along at home with the saga of 220 E. College Ave., you may remember that a little more than two years ago we reported the storefront then occupied by Uni-Mart had been emptied completely. Its loss was felt by those Penn State students who enjoyed grabbing a Gatorade and burrito on their stumbles home from the Highlands, but the location was rather dirty and — to use the technical term — sketchy.

The storefront has been reclaimed by the convenience store world, but this time it has been taken over by local favorite Snappy’s, which also has locations in State College up North Atherton St. and down University Drive. The folks in the downtown location seem friendly (see the pic above for evidence) and the interior has a very clean feel to it. All in, I say it’s a good fit for the location! Penn State and the Process of Life

To paraphrase Mark Twain: The reports of higher education’s death have been an exaggeration. American universities produce more research and relevant knowledge for the world at large than any other institutions I know of. Tuition may be too damn high, but over the long-run, undergraduate degrees are definitely worth the cost. But Penn State could be so much more. It used to be, I think.
