Joey Gladstone and The World Champion Tore Up the HUB

I legitimately couldn’t stop laughing. At some points, I was in fact the only one cracking up in a crowd of roughly 200 people…it got kinda awkward. But it was worth it- watching comedians do their thing will get me every time.

Two shows were combined in one night, and I could see why some believe the acts were thrown together randomly. Dave Coulier, better known as Full House’s “Uncle Joey Gladstone,” and Judah Friedlander–30 Rock‘s Frank Rossitano–headlined SPA Late Night Friday night in the HUB.

Coulier and Friedlander are working on some other things right now as well as stand-up comedy. Coulier has a website “Can’t Get Arrested,” but he didn’t talk too much about it. Friedlander’s Book How to Beat Up Anybody, which he sold at the show, was a recurring part of his set.

As the show began, all the hype was about Coulier–but surprisingly enough he was the opening act. Still, he set the show off with a killing.

Coulier didn’t touch upon too much material from Full House but when he said, “Cut it out,” the audience went into a frenzy, for good reason. I can’t sit here explaining their acts. It’d be an unfortunate, “You had to be there,” kind of moment and I’d butcher the entire show. But I must say, they had the entire room bursting out in laughter.

Coulier’s funniest joke came in his giving advice to vacationers. When you are in another country and you need to speak the language, Coulier said he has the answer to help out Americans. The easiest thing is to is use everyday words and just add the native emphasis on each word.

For example: In Mexico, you’d say, “Eat a lot of potatoes and go to play bingo.” Once you add the accent, you’re all set. And in Germany, you’d say, “A stick in the eye is like stroking a hamster- [add at the end] hiccup!” For real, you should try that. It’s funny.

You could tell Coulier was a prepared and professional, but Judah Friedlander might’ve been stoned and definitely went with reactions from the audience- in my opinion, the best kind of comedy show.

Friedlander’s entire skit was based on his athletic accomplishments. It was hilarious to hear what he has “accomplished,” while staring at his build. He stated that he was a black belt in karate, ran a race with a cheetah (and won), “weight-lifted weightlifters, while weightlifting,” and added that LeBron James has a picture of him hanging up on his wall. Furthermore, he elaborated on his outstanding fishing skills: “I just looked in the water and said ‘get the fuck out!'” Like I said, I can’t sit here transcribing all of his jokes– I’ll ruin them– but I feel like you should have a piece of what I experienced.

The two best ones, which I saw tweeted by many people after the show, were his responses when asked what sports he has played and someone brought up lacrosse and sex positions:

  • Lacrosse is not a real sport. It is an activity frat boys put together.
  • His favorite sexual position is the “Santa.” He has sex with a girl on the roof and throws her down the chimney.

All in all, this was a hysterical show, and was definitely worth it for being free. In all honesty, I probably would’ve paid for that show, too. I’m sorry to say that if you missed it, you missed a good show.
