Lady Lions to Host No. 14 UNC on Wednesday

The No. 16/15 Penn State women’s basketball team hosts No. 14/13 North Carolina on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The 5-1 Lady Lions will be facing their best opponent of the season so far when they take on the 5-0 Tar Heels.

Over Thanksgiving break, the Lady Lions took a trip to Reno, Nev., for the Nugget Classic. After beating Iowa State 66-59 on Friday, Penn State beat host Nevada 103-65 on Saturday to take home the title. The convincing win came at a good time for the Lady Lions, who have been somewhat unconvincing this season.

Despite the 5-1 record, Penn State has had to make comebacks to win in several games this season. The Lady Lions are also getting limited production from their inside players up to this point. Penn State will always get points from its guard trio of Alex Bentley, Maggie Lucas, and Zhaque Gray, but it needs production from Mia Nickson and Nikki Greene to be successful this year.

Penn State will hope to extend its new-found momentum against North Carolina. The Tar Heels are a quality team that is led by Chay Shegog, who is averaging nearly a double-double per game. Shegog is scoring 16.4 points per game and is averaging 8.4 rebounds per game.

If the quality of competition isn’t enough to get you to the Bryce Jordan Center on Wednesday, the game is a Dollar Dog Night–always a crowd favorite. The first 150 students to arrive will also receive a voucher for a free pizza from Domino’s as well. As with every Lady Lion game this season, Penn State students get in for free.

After hosting the Tar Heels, the Lady Lions travel to Lubbock, Texas, to take on Texas Tech on Saturday. That game is part of the Big 12/Big Ten Challenge.

In the end, the Conecticut women’s basketball team was just too talented. The Lady Lions fought until the final whistle, but it was not enough to even come close. The Huskies dominated for almost the entire 40 minutes in a 77-59 victory, knocking Penn State out of the NCAA Tournament.
