Calling All Musicians: Arts Crawl Wants You

For the 6th year running the Penn State arts community lays waste to the claim that our university only benefits those in business and engineering by collecting the creatively inclined for a full night of music, visual art and trippy shit art students made after going to class high.

The esoterically infamous Arts Crawl is scheduled to take place on March 30th. As usual, Penn State’s finest in creative expression will be showcasing their talents at the full night event.

And the only thing that goes better with art than medical marijuana is live music. That’s where you (local musicians, not drug dealers) come in.

SOMA (@PSUSOMA) is looking for the most musically inclined of the student body to provide the auditory entertainment for the night. Artists from disciples ranging from photography and sculpture will be represented, so this open casting call is an opportunity for musicians at Penn State to have their jams heard. It’s kind of like the collegiate equivalent to when your mom put your macaroni art on the fridge.

According to the Facebook Event, there is an opening for 15 to 20 bands or artists to be booked through out the night. Those interested are asked to send basic info (name, genre) and links to playable material to psusoma@gmail.com.

The SOMA crew is pretty chill, so an official deadline for applications isn’t specified. However, according to club members, the chosen bands will be notified by mid-February. This rough time slot will allow time for organizing showtimes and assigning one of the 5-6 designated music rooms to interested musical acts.

Last year, Arts Crawl included artists from genres ranging from solo acoustic acts to full indie outfits to a “DJ room” designated for electronica (this has been confirmed to be returning). There are no exceptions or limitations on what noise you can make and call music. If you can jam it and people are kind of digging it, then submit it.

Also, the application isn’t limited to students. Bands from all across PA (but not you, Jersey) are encouraged to try and get involved.

There aren’t many chances for Penn State musicians to get the exposure offered by performing at Arts Crawl. This isn’t the cover band garbage you’ll hear at Indigo on Wednesdays. Arts Crawl is unique in its dedication to originality and the endless possibility of a conglomerate of young artists. Plus, it’s a hell of a lot easier to get on the Arts Crawl bill than for Movin’ On (which is also accepting applications for Battle of the Bands).

So if you are a musician or know someone who would be good on stage, send this open call along. Also, those who are graphic design savvy or just awesome doodlers, SOMA is looking for user-submitted visual designs to print on Arts Crawl posters and t-shirts. Past graphics include shark-bats and a laser-bear, so the Nittany Lion wearing something stereotypically artsy like a beret won’t cut it. I’d enjoy something that blended obscure medieval weaponry and a muskrat…but that’s just me.
