#MusicMonday Brings You The Hits

Welcome back to the second installment of #MusicMonday, the remix. This week, we bring you four new songs from four Onward State staff members. Contributors this week are Melanie Versaw, Alex Federman, Sam Cooper and Matt D’Ippolito.

Childish Gambino – “Heartbeat” (explicit)

Donald Glover is a quadruple threat. His improv troupe, Derrick Comedy, is hilarious and never misses a beat; not to mention his newest stand-up special, Weirdo, which gained Donald even more recognition in the comedy world. His writing for 30 Rock was nothing less than phenomenal. His character, Troy, in Community is one of the most lovable characters on TV. And for those of you who don’t know, Donald Glover can RAP. Donald raps under the name Childish Gambino, and his music is rapidly gaining popularity. Coming from someone who listens to indie and alternative rock, I like to call Childish Gambino’s rap genre “Indie Rap.” He isn’t your typical rapper, adding some goofy metaphors into serious situations. His newest album, Camp, turned some heads in the rap industry. “Bonfire” was the first single off of the album, and one of my personal favorites (you should check it out!). He just released a video on Saturday for the song “Heartbeat”, which he performed on Conan once the album dropped. The mix of the honesty in the lyrics and the beat makes for a great song to get you through a tough Monday.

Henry Wolfe- “Someone Else”

I found this song in the end credits from the movie Terri, a small indie comedy from last year. I don’t know much about the singer, but it’s just the kind of song that gets stuck in your head. Simple, yet extremely hummable. Also, Henry Wolfe is apparently Meryl Streep’s son.

Guided By Voices – “The Unsinkable Fats Domino”

The beer-chugging lo-fi rock legends are back! Robert Pollard and Guided by Voices have reunited and recently released Let’s Go Eat the Factory in January, the band’s first album since 2004’s Half Smiles of the Decomposed. “Factory” is the first GBV album since 1996 to feature the band’s “classic lineup” that brought them recognition in the 90’s with classic albums like Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes. Frontman Bob Pollard is one of the best songwriters of the past 30 years and has written literally thousands of songs. “The Unsinkable Fats Domino” is the lead single from Factory and fits right in with any of the band’s 90’s classics. Don’t let the gray hair fool you, GBV still kicks ass. They recently performed the song on The David Letterman Show and still rock as hard as they did 20 years ago. Plus, bassist Greg Demos busts his ass mid-song then gets up and keeps playing!

!!! – “Jamie, My Intentions Are Bass”

No, you saw that right. The band’s name is three exclamation points and is pronounced “Chk Chk Chk.” In preparation for THON, some fun dance punk is called for. This song is from their last album, released back in 2010, and it will make you want to get up and move. Much of the band’s music is very rhythmic and beat-heavy and is comparable to LCD Soundsystem. For even more danceable tunes, check out AM/FM and Heart of Hearts. Next time you start warming up your dancing feet, you may find yourself addicted to these guys.
