Penn Staters for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow Hopes to Bring Colbert to Campus

Penn State, do you spend your evening hours laughing at the comedic news of the Colbert Report? Would you like to see Stephen Colbert come to Penn State without having to spend any of your Student Activity Fee dollars on his appearance? Penn Staters for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow is looking to do just that.

The Supreme Court case Citizens United vs. FEC decided that money is free speech, which legalized Super-PACs. These Political Action Committees on steroids allow wealthy donors to fund political campaigns without limits. Many opponents of the decision argue that these Super-PACs allow wealthy members of our society to have too much influence over elections. Stephen Colbert created his own Super-PAC, Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow (overseen by Jon Stewart), to comedically combat the actual Super-PACs currently flooding our airwaves with propaganda.

In an episode last week, Colbert announced the selling of the Colbert Super Fun Pack, a do-it-yourself guide to starting a branch of Colbert’s fundraising Super-PAC in your own hometown. Along with the paperwork, the Pack includes a treasure-map with a promise that the first PAC to find the treasure will win a free appearance by the comedic genius himself.

Remy Maisel, a freshman here at PSU, has already pre-ordered the Super Fun Pack with the intent of starting a branch of the super-PAC here on campus. Her goal is to get all of the Colbert fans on campus involved with solving the treasure hunt. She said the idea of a Colbert Super-PAC is an example of using absurdity to highlight important issues in America. “Money in politics is the biggest issue right now, because nothing else can be solved until it is,” she said. She also mentioned how this “crazy, maybe stupid endeavor,” could bring attention to the role that Super-PACs are playing in the current election. Responding to the notion that money is free speech, she equated Super-PACs to “standing on all the tables in a room and screaming.”

Some may remember the student-led attempt to name a science undergraduate student center after Colbert two years ago. S.COLBERT, the “Science Center Of Learning: Bringing Educational Resources Together,” won by a whopping 85% of the votes. If that level of interest still exists at Penn State, now’s the time to show it.

If you’re interested in getting involved with Penn Staters for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow, like the Facebook page to get updates and to help solve the treasure map. All are welcome to participate, this Super-PAC isn’t just limited to students!
