The 2012 Blue-White Game: Not Your Grandfather’s Scoring System

Add another intriguing storyline to Saturday’s game. Earlier today, in our Frequently Asked Questions about Blue-White Weekend, we briefly touched on what the format had been in the past, saying we would provide an update when one was released. One is now available. Additional information can be found on gopsusports, but the main details are listed below:

  • The offense will wear white except for quarterbacks who will sport red practice jerseys. Points can be scored for the offense in the following ways:

Touchdown = 6 pts
Field Goal = 3 pts
Big play (15+ yard play) = 2 pts
Two Consecutive First Downs = 2 pts
PAT = 1 pt

  • The defense will be wearing blue and and has a scoring system of its own:

Touchdown = 7pts
Turnover (Unless TD) = 6pts
Sack = 4pts
Three-and-Out = 1 pt
Tackle for loss = 2 pts

This is certainly different than the traditional scoring system of the past, but while the concept may be foreign to Penn State, it has been used elsewhere in spring games, and I really need to pass full judgment on it until the game plays out. In many ways, I think this will make the game easier to follow, but scoreboard operators will also have to be on their toes more than usual after each play.

The score on Saturday does not so much matter as much as how players and units look under Bill O’Brien, but it is different and will be worth keeping an eye on.

Let us know what you think in the comments. At first sight, do you like the change or do you prefer the traditional system? Also make sure to check out the rest of our Blue-White coverage leading up to and through Saturday.
