Media Dodgeball: Looking for a Comeback

Quite a bit has changed since October 22, 2011, when the Penn State media giants last met within the hallowed confines of Pollock Quad. Awards have been won, leaders have changed, and moments of understanding have increased.

Perhaps the most notable change comes from the departure of Adam Smeltz from StateCollege.com — the man who cost Onward State their rightful victory last October and wrote this intimate recap. Although Smeltz will live on in our hearts this afternoon, his absence stands as perhaps the worst change of all, even if he didn’t see Mike Cottone step over the line.

But there’s one thing that still hasn’t changed: It’s time to buckle up. Naturally, the only way to settle the question of who is top dog in the Penn State media world is to hurl green spheres at each other for an hour or two and see who walks away the victor.

And so, for the second time in as many semesters, Onward State, the Daily Collegian, Valley Magazine, and the Phroth will clash at 4:30 p.m. in the Pollock Quad in the quest for media dominance.

Come out, bring snacks (or whatever else you choose to indulge in on 4/20), and cheer on your favorite media outlet on the path to dodgeball glory.

Can’t make it to the match?

We’re working on an update. Read Saturday’s edition of Onward State for more details.

Hometown Brewery Releases Beer Honoring Evan Pugh

Penn State’s first president Evan Pugh was born in 1828 at Jordan Bank Farm, three miles south of the city center of Oxford, Pennsylvania, an hour west of Philadelphia in Chester County. One-hundred eighty-nine years later, an Oxford brewery is honoring one of the preeminent champions of “liberal and practical” higher education in the form of a delicious Porter.
