Penn State’s Hill Posts No-Hitter in Win over Iowa

On Saturday, Penn State baseball defeated Iowa 2-0 on the road in Iowa City as pitcher Steven Hill posted the first Penn State no-hitter since 1995. Hill, a junior, forced a groundout by Iowa’s Jacob Yacinich to end the 9th on a historic note, as no Nittany Lions pitcher has ever thrown a no-hitter in a Big Ten game.

With this win, Hill emphatically recorded his fourth consecutive victory and his second complete game for the season. He threw 105 pitches–69 of which for strikes–and struck out three batters, while allowing just two base runners on the day. On the season, Hill has accumulated a 3.75 ERA with a 4-3 record, building upon his breakout sophomore campaign in which he was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team.

Of course, this accomplishment was not Hill’s alone; he himself cited luck as a deciding factor on the final play of the game, and his teammates bailed him out with some outstanding defensive play.  Hill also had a little help from freshman catcher JC Coban, who provided the only offense of the game with a two-run homer in the top of the fifth.

We congratulate Hill on his accomplishment, but would like him to reconsider some details on his GoPSUsports profile in case Penn Staters want to get know him. I mean, come on, “favorite thing about Medlar” is the Blue Loop? “Favorite website” is ANGEL? At least he has a good sense of humor to go along with that no-hitter.

In other news, the Nittany Lions will head into the series finale with an 18-20 record (6-5 Big Ten) as Iowa (15-19, 4-7 Big Ten) seeks to prevent the sweep.
