Sandusky Accusers File Motions to Remain Anonymous

There is little doubt that the alleged victims of the sex crimes committed by Jerry Sandusky will have to take the stand and testify when the trial starts in early June. A major concern has arisen in the fact that these witnesses will be forced to state their name before testifying, effectively revealing their identities to the inevitable swarm of national and local media, and subsequently, the world.

On Monday, attorneys for victims 3, 4, 5, and 7 filed motions at the Centre County Courthouse in the hopes of preventing that from happening. The motions asked for the court to consider allowing the alleged victims to use pseudonyms when giving testimony, and cited several previous high-profile cases as precedence for this procedure.

Additionally, seven groups relating to sexual abuse prevention filed an Amici Curiae brief in support of protecting the accusers’ identities. Those documents can be found on the Centre County Government website. Jury selection for the trial is set to begin June 5.

Penn State’s first president Evan Pugh was born in 1828 at Jordan Bank Farm, three miles south of the city center of Oxford, Pennsylvania, an hour west of Philadelphia in Chester County. One-hundred eighty-nine years later, an Oxford brewery is honoring one of the preeminent champions of “liberal and practical” higher education in the form of a delicious Porter.
