Centre Daily Times Free No More

First, The Wall Street Journal. Then, The New York Times. Now — the last of the “big three” — The Centre Daily Times has finally been forced to succumb to an online paywall.

The news was revealed months ago after Jim Romenesko announced that all McClatchy Company newspapers would start using a paywall system. The McClatchy Company owns The Centre Daily Times, but the newspaper decided to wait until yesterday to officially announce it on their website. The link was up for a few hours before it mysteriously stopped working, but here’s a screenshot:

The announcement was posted on Facebook, received dozens of negative responses, and was deleted. A tweet sent from @centredailycom announcing the news was also removed.

I imagine today is a great day for the folks at The Daily Collegian. They already give The Centre Daily Times a run for their money in local print coverage when classes are in session, and the fact that approximately seven people will be paying the $59.95 to read the CDT each year can only increase TDC’s reach.

What do you think? Will you pay to read The Centre Daily Times? Did you even read The Centre Daily Times in the first place? Let us know in the comments.

One-hundred eighty-nine years later, an Oxford brewery is honoring one of the preeminent champions of “liberal and practical” higher education in the form of a delicious Porter.
