The NCAA Wants Their Trophies Back
Last month, the NCAA took Penn State’s wins, and now they want their trophies too.
According to a report from WHPTV in Harrisburg, the NCAA expects Penn State to return the six bowl trophies it obtained from the 1998-2011 period in which all wins were vacated.
Mark Emmert wiped away 111 wins from Penn State and Joe Paterno in late July. Penn State won six bowl games during the 13-year now-vacated period: the Outback Bowl (1998, 2006) and Alamo Bowl (1999, 2007) twice, the Orange Bowl (2005), and the Capital One Bowl (2010)
As of last week, all of those trophies were removed from their usual display cases in Lasch Building lobby. It is currently unknown where they are stored.
It is also unknown if and when Penn State will hand back the trophies at the NCAA’s request.
UPDATE: 5:15 p.m. – WHPTV’s Jason Bristol is now reporting that the NCAA did not direct Penn State to return the trophies, but that each bowl operator must decide what is appropriate.
