The New Penn State Dining App Sucks

For a long time, it’s been a nuisance to get on a computer — and an even bigger nuisance to pick up the Daily Collegian — to check what is going to be served in the dining halls. I was relieved when I heard about the new dining app, which would seem to an easy and convenient solution for navigating the dining halls.

How wrong I was.

The new app supposedly shows the menu for the day, map of the dining hall location, nutritional facts, and the hours of operation. For someone that’s always on the go, it’s great not to have to pick up a copy of the Collegian or stop at a computer to find out what I’m going to be eating for dinner, but it seems that the app can’t even be used for that.

Since the app launched several weeks ago, the menu never seems to be correct. Of course Pollock will have breadsticks and West will have delicious cookies, but the other always changing menu items don’t ever seem to be correct. My excitement for the app dwindled outright when I waltzed into Late Night for tater tots, and instead only managed to find lukewarm hash browns.

And forget about using the app if you’re one of the several thousands who use an Android device. This inaccurate app is for Iphone users only. So in essence it’s only useful if you own an iPhone and want to know when the dining hall closes.

We can’t really blame whoever developed the app though. Apparently the app gets all of its information from the Food Services website, which we all know is only correct about 50% anyway. But still, can’t we manage to have one place that can accurately tell us whether we need avoid what they’re serving in the dining halls that day?
