DIY Projects To Spice Up Your Dorm

It’s been a little over a month since we’ve all moved back to the happiest of valleys and it’s time for some change. I know you’re sick of walking into that horribly decorated dorm room, cubicle, or shabby apartment with walls like a hospital. Well, if you’re ready to spice things up a little and get that chill atmosphere going keep on reading for some quick, easy do-it-yourself projects.

Wall Décor

  • Wall decals/Posters – Although a little pricy, wall decals are perfect for covering up those gross stains on the wall from residents past. They also add some inviting flavor from wall to wall. Target seems to sell a wide selection, with the cheapest being around nine bucks. Before settling in South this August, I made sure to purchase some cool posters from posterrevolution.com (the college section has everything).
  • Tapestry – If you smoke pot and think you’re chill you probably want one of these in your room. First attested in English in 1467, a tapestry translates into “heavy fabric.” A variety of tapestries are sold downtown at Apple Tree for $20.
  • Wire Photo Wall – These are perfect if you want to spruce up those white walls. Basically, all you have to do is put twenty dollars in your pocket, head out to Walmart, and buy a cable, 2 wire sleeves, 2 screw eyes, one screw eye with a hook turnbuckle, then print out your favorite photos. Step by step instructions can be found here.
  • Construction Paper Wall – Buy construction paper and plaster them on your wall like this.

Lighting

  •  Customize Your Lampshade – It’s easy to add some vibrancy and color to the room by giving a little attention to those depressing lampshades. Go buy ready-made appliqué’s from Uncle Eli’s and press them on (if they have an adhesive), or glue them in any particular pattern.

Storage/Organization

  • Ribbon Board – A ribbon board is ideal if you’re attempting to organize pictures, letters, or postcards. Take fiberboard, cut it to size, and layer it with linen, stapling it to the back. Next, use upholstery tacks to secure the ribbons in your desired pattern. Finally, slip your photographs under and hang that baby up.
  • Jewelry Plate – This project is great if you have a million earrings, bracelets, and necklaces lying on your counter in one big jumbled pile. First, go out and buy (or order from IKEA) a side plate and the neglinge candle holder. Glue the top of the candle holder to the bottom of the plate, let it dry, and then place the creation so that the candle holder is on the bottom. It should look something like this.

Let’s face it: whether you’re living in East, South, Pollock, West, or a downtown apartment, there is always room for some interior improvement. Take some of these tips and you’ll be left with that “home away from home” feeling every time you step into your humble abode.
