Schreyer Dean Christian Brady Shaves For Movember

Schreyer Honors College Dean Christian Brady just recently lost his signature mustache after shaving it off at a “shaving party” in Atherton Hall last night at 6:30 p.m. We have all been cognizant to the fact that this month has been about raising awareness and money for the treatment of breast cancer, and now it’s time broaden that awareness to prostate cancer.

Brady, along with team members Steven Bookbinder, Ben Stewart, James Halpin, Melissa Doberstein, and Erhan Selvi have decided to work together in hopes of raising money and attention for prostate cancer treatment and research. This was a big moment in history for Brady, and he claims that he has lived a fulfilling life with his beard/mustache for a remarkable twenty years. The beard reportedly remained because his kids would stop conversing with him if he lost it.

During November every year, men around the world agree to grow mustaches for the sake of the organization, Movember. Anyone can register at www.movember.com, where individuals pledge to go clean-shaven on Movember 1st. These men are known as Mo Bros, as they continue to increase public recognition of prostate cancer by initiating public and private conversation with people of the community. Women are entitled Mo Sistas, where they too can lend support to the commonly ignored issue of men’s health.

“I am shaving my nearly 20 year old mustache,” Brady said. “Changing my appearance will undoubtedly allow me to explain Movember and encourage financial support and health consciousness.”

Movember began in Melbourne, Australia and has become increasingly prominent in New Zealand, Canada, the UK, South African, Ireland, Finland, Spain, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Belgium, the Czech Republic, and the United States. Last year, $126.3 million was raised with the assistance of over 845,000 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas.

So boys—shave that mustache off today and let it grow back through the rest of the month. Help the men’s health movement become as acclaimed as the women’s health movement by raising awareness for the next thirty days.
