DE Deion Barnes Named B1G Freshman of the Year

The accolades just keep on coming for Penn State football.

A day after six Nittany Lions were rewarded with 1st Team All-Big Ten honors, defensive end Deion Barnes was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year.

Barnes had a stellar year under first-year Defensive Coordinator Ted Roof, registering 26 tackles (10 for loss), and a team-high six sacks. The redshirt freshman will be expected to anchor a defensive line that is graduating Sean Stanley, Pete Massaro, and Jordan Hill in 2013.

Barnes wasn’t the only Penn State to receive an award tonight. Bill O’Brien was named Big Ten Coach of the year as well.

Overall, Penn State is home to six All-Big Ten 1st teamers, the B1g WR of the year, LB of the year, Freshman of the year, and Coach of the Year. Not bad at all for a team who many thought wouldn’t reach .500.
