Hockey Hero Mike Eruzione to Speak at Penn State

As part of its Distinguished Speaker Series, the Student Programming Association is bringing Mike Eruzione, captain of the 1980 U.S. Olympic men’s ice hockey team, to Eisenhower Auditorium.

If you don’t get goosebumps every time you watch footage of the Miracle on Ice, when Al Michaels screams, “Do you believe in miracles? Yes!” then you’re clearly not a real American. Mike Eruzione scored the goal against the Soviet Union that would win the game for the U.S., 4-3. The Americans would then go on to defeat Finland to win the gold medal at Lake Placid. As exciting as it was for our parents to watch this unfold, our generation was equally excited to learn about it through the 2004 film, Miracle, that depicted the U.S. team’s run.

Eruzione won’t be around until April 10, 2013, but just take a minute to think that the man who scored the winning goal against the Soviets at Lake Placid will be breathing the same air as you for an evening. Since 1980, Eruzione has worked as a sports broadcaster, calling Olympic games from Sarajevo to Lillehammer, as well as a motivational speaker, for many years.

Tickets will be free, and available to students with ID on March 27, 2013, and then to the general public on April 3.
