Julie Del Giorno Hired to Oversee NCAA Compliance at Penn State

Julie Del Giorno has interacted with the NCAA before. The Army veteran and longtime education worker was a second team All-American her senior year at Army, scoring 1,270 points in her basketball career.

But now, Del Giorno will work with college athletics’ governing body in a different capacity, having accepted the newly created athletics integrity officer role at Penn State, the university announced Thursday.

“Julie is an outstanding choice for this position. As she begins her work here at Penn State, she will draw on more than two decades of experience in higher education and the U.S. military,” Penn State president Rodney Erickson said in a release.

“Her track record of success in athletics oversight and operations, student affairs, logistics, and institutional planning has given her valuable experience that will serve the university well.”

After two tours of duty that earned her the U.S. Army’s Bronze Star Medal, Del Giorno embarked on a lengthy academic career, culminating with her last stop at Moravian College. There, she oversaw the college’s Division III athletic program, as well as served as the school’s chief of staff.

“I am honored and humbled to be selected to serve as the first ever athletics integrity officer at Penn State. I will commit myself fully to the position and will work diligently to ensure that policies, procedures, and practices are developed and implemented that will ensure Penn State’s compliance with the requirements set forth in the Athletics Integrity Agreement,” Del Giorno said in a press release.

Created as a part of the package of sanctions NCAA president Mark Emmert handed Penn State last July, Del Giorno’s position will help the continual fulfillment of the university’s Athletic Integrity Agreement. As a part of that, Del Giorno will be charged with “development, implementation, and oversight of policies and practices within the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics that ensure compliance and ethical conduct,” according to the release.

Del Giorno will begin working part-time for the university in March, before taking the position full-time April 1.

“I look forward to working in partnership with members of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics to include student-athletes and with members of the faculty and staff on this critical work,” Del Giorno said.
