Internet Petition Demands Return of Paterno Statue

It hasn’t been a good time to be a Penn State trustee recently. Now, a petition on the website Change.org has been establised calling for the university’s ultimate governing body to bring back the statue of Joe Paterno that stood outside Beaver Stadium from 2001 until it was removed in July 2012.

Here’s the full text of the petition:

Joe Paterno was used as a scapegoat for other’s [sic] failures. The media rushed to judgement and the Board of Trustees accepted what the media was telling them to do. They hired Louis Freeh to make a report full of assumptions to what really happened with no real proof. In America we are innocent till proven guilty and there is no proof Joe did anything wrong. We the people want the truth and Joe’s legacy restored. We also want the NCAA to reverse the sanctions which they placed on innocent students and fans and residents of State College which had nothing to do with Jerry.

So far, the petition has garnered 235 signatures from Pennsylvania and around the country, 30 short of the page’s listed goal of 265.

Although not legally binding to the Board of Trustees by any means, if the petition gains enough signatories, it could attract a significant amount of attention turned toward the Board, and reignite questions about the current status of the statue.
