Latest Poll: Pennsylvanians Disapprove of Gov. Corbett, But Support His Fight Against the NCAA

Although many Pennsylvania voters supportĀ Tom Corbett’s lawsuit against the NCAA, a majority of pollstersĀ disapprove of the way he’s handled his first term as governor.

According to the latest Quinnipiac poll released yesterday, only 36 percent of Pennsylvanians polled approve Tom Corbett first-term performance.

“It’s halftime in Gov. Tom Corbett’s first term and if he were running a football team instead of a state, he’d fire his offensive coordinator,” said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute in the release published yesterday.

Corbett received his highest approval rating (50 percent) on September 29th, 2011, about a month before Jerry Sandusky was charged with dozens of counts relating to child abuse. Since then, Corbett’s rating hasn’t topped 41 percent.

However, 43 percent of those polled support Corbett’s lawsuit challenging the NCAA sanctions — which 53 percent of Pa. voters say are “too severe,” up seven percent from the Quinnipiac survey in taken last August.

It’ll be intriguing to see how the potential success or failure of Governor Corbett’s legal actions against the NCAA dictate his reputation amongst Pa. voters.

The late Joe Paterno’s approval rating has remained steady at 43 percent — 54 percent among Penn State households. In a December 2011 poll, Paterno’s rating was slightly higher at 44 percent.
