Anthony Midget Hired as Safeties Coach

Penn State’s coaching staff is once again complete as the hiring of Anthony Midget as safeties coach was officially announced this morning after The Charleson Daily Mail, a paper in West Virginia that covers Marshall football, first reported the news a week ago.

Midget spent the previous five college football seasons at Georgia State, serving as the defensive coordinator in 2012. He then took a job as a defensive assistant at Marshall before ultimately ending up in Happy Valley.

Going back to his playing days, Midget was a stud cornerback at Virginia Tech in the late 1990s, playing on the 1999 team that reached the BCS National Championship game and being a first-team All- Big East honoree before being drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the 5th round of the 2000 NFL Draft.

“I am thankful for Coach O’Brien for the opportunity to come to Penn State and am excited to get to know the players and get ready for spring practice,” said Midget in a press release.

New defensive coordinator John Butler, promoted after Ted Roof went home to Georgia Tech, will continue to coach the cornerbacks, but Midget will inherit some experienced players at the safety position including seniors Malcolm Willis and Stephen Obeng-Agyapong.

“Anthony will be a great addition to our staff. He is an experienced and passionate defensive coach and recruiter,” said Bill O’Brien.

O’Brien’s full staff of assistants for the 2013 season can be found below:

  • Charlie Fisher — Quarterbacks coach
  • Charles London — Running backs coach
  • Stan Hixon — Wide receivers coach
  • John Strollo — Tight ends coach
  • Mac McWhorter — Offensive line coach
  • John Butler — Defensive coordinator
  • Larry Johnson Sr. — Defensive line coach
  • Ron Vanderlinden — Linebackers coach
  • Anthony Midget — Safeties coach
  • Craig Fitzgerald — Strength and conditioning coach
