The ‘Indiana Jones of Virus Hunting’ is Coming

GlobeMed (@GlobeMedPSU), along with the support of several other student organizations, will be hosting its 6th annual Global Health Conference this Friday and Saturday, April 5-6. The conference, “Finding Your Place in the Movement,” hopes to inspire attendants to become more active in the movement toward social justice and global health equity. You can register for the event here.

The conference begins Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. in Berg Auditorium with keynote speaker, Dr. Nathan Wolfe, or as he is known, the “Indiana Jones of Virus Hunting.” Is it possible to achieve a more badass title than that? Dr. Wolfe Jones, who has been named one of Time’s Most Influential People in the World and Rolling Stone’s Top 100 Agents of Change, will explore his research in the field of virology, as well as the future of pandemic prevention as the future of exploration.

Saturday’s events kick off with breakfast in the Life Science Gateway Bridge at 10 a.m., and rumor has it that there will be bacon (actually, there is no such rumor, but how great would that be?). Following the morning grub-down, there will be a couple breakout sessions showcasing several nonprofit speakers, a director of an HIV clinic, several social entrepreneurs, and more.

After lunch, club presentations, and a few more breakout sessions, the day will reach its climax as Penn State Alumnus, Bob McKinnon, will take the stage at 2:45 p.m., sharing his experience with designing social change programs as founder of the GaleWill Center for Opportunity and Progress. The conference will then end with a panel debate of the role of cultural relativism in the midst of globalization, an a capella performance by Code of Conduct, and dinner at 5:30 p.m.

Three meals, Indiana Jones, and mind-blowing conversations we should all be engaged in. What’s not to love? But if my words aren’t quite enough to convince you, here is what GlobeMed has to say:

The purpose of this event is to encourage students of all majors to embrace the influence they possess to create positive social change through engagement and collaboration. GlobeMed emphasizes the importance of partnership and education in order to have an effective and sustainable impact and form a true movement in solidarity.

Jim’s Army & Navy: The Greatest Store Ever

For those of you who have ventured onto the west side of Beaver Avenue, there is a good chance you have passed by Jim’s Army & Navy. If you are one of those people, your first thought when passing by Jim’s was most likely, “What the hell is going on in this store?” When a store’s window display boasts handcuffs (they even come in pink), switchblades, throwing stars, machetes, other swords, and ammunition, you really have no choice but to be utterly confounded. Little did I know that I was about to walk into the greatest store ever.
