Former Creamery Employee Charged with Fraud

A 21-year-old woman is facing multiple counts of theft and fraud after an incident at Penn State’s Berkey Creamery. Alexandra Otero allegedly used a student’s ID card to purchase about $40 worth of merchandise from the creamery in April.

Otero, of Bronx, N.Y., is charged with unlawful use of a computer, identity theft, access device fraud, theft of property, theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property.

Otero was an employee at the creamery, according to police.

University Police Assistant Chief Bill Moerschbacher says fraudulent use of ID cards happens frequently around campus. “We just take a look at where the disputed charges are and then go right to the businesses and find out exactly what was purchased and when,” he said. “A lot of places have surveillance, but every place usually has good records, so we can tell right away what charges are in dispute.”

Otero was released on $15,000 bail. She’s scheduled for a preliminary hearing on June 5 at the Centre County Courthouse.
