Former Penn State QB Kevin Newsome Quits Football

College life hasn’t exactly been easy for Kevin Newsome. The former Penn StateĀ four-star dual-threat quarterback recruit out of Virginia has decided to quit football atĀ Temple, his latest school.

Newsome came to Penn State in 2009 with very high hopes of being the next great Nittany Lions quarterback. However, in his two years in Happy Valley, Newsome went 14 for 24 with 144 yards and no passing touchdowns, adding 154 yards and three touchdowns on 34 rushing attempts. He was routinely passed over for other guys: first Daryll Clark as a freshman, then Matt McGloin and Rob Bolden as a sophomore.

He left Penn State in August of 2011 and transferred to Tidewater (Va.) Community College, which doesn’t have a football team, before transferring to Temple. Newsome arrived on campus a day before training camp began last season and didn’t get a chance to start as he worked his way back to game shape.

Newsome threw just one pass last year, an incompletion against Cincinnati, and ran the ball five times for 57 yards as he backed up current Temple QB Chris Coyer (who’s not exactly Johnny Manziel). There were some rumblings that Newsome may move to wide receiver, but nothing ever came of that.

Newsome was originally expected to line up at halfback for the Owls this year before he decided to leave the team. It never did quite work out like everyone expected for Kevin, but we all would like to wish him the best in his future.
