Six Nittany Lions Invited To U.S. Lacrosse Tryouts

Penn State lacrosse will send six players — one current and five former — to U.S. National Team tryouts at Groucher College in Baltimore on August 30 and September 1.

The tryouts will be to determine which players will join the team for the 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse Championships in Denver. Of the 98 players that were invited to participate, 40 will make the final roster.

The only current Nittany Lion to make the team is rising senior goalkeeper Austin Kaut. Kaut was named the best goalie in the country last year, along with a bevy of other awards, including CAA Player of the Year and a first-team USILA All-American.

Joining Kaut will be five PSU alumni: short-stick defensive midfielder Chris Schriller (’99), attacking midfielders Pat Heim (’07) and Matthew Mackrides (’12), face-off specialist Greg Gurenlian (’06) and goalie Drew Adams (’09). Schriller is the only man to have made the U.S. National Team previously, in 2010.

Penn State’s six representatives are the most of any school not named Johns Hopkins (which is sending twelve players), Maryland (nine), or Virginia (seven). The team also features Penn State’s head coach Jeff Tambroni as an assistant.
