Penn State Love Stories: Part 2

Last week, I posted the first round of Penn State love stories in my recurring Friday series. This week, I bring you three more couples’ stories, along with hope that you may in fact meet your future spouse in that 8 a.m. class you always skip.

Introducing…

Mike and Brittany

He is: Mike Pointek, Class of 2010

She is: Brittany Giarnelli, Class of 2010

They first met: In art class, when she asked to see his notes. (She snatched them out of his hands before he could say ‘yes.’)

What happened next: He “casually” bumped into her at the start of the next class, and from that day forward, they sat together every day. They’d talk together — about everything — for the entire class. “We never seemed to stop laughing but he never asked me out,” Brittany said. “I kept telling all my girlfriends about my frat boy art class crush who was never going to make a move.” Finally, he asked her out on a day when she was wearing no makeup and a big, oversized sweater. Brittany says it “wasn’t her finest moment.”

Now they’re: Engaged

And have been together: 4 ½ years

Their soundbite: “I thank God everyday for that moment in art class when I stole notes from ‘the frat boy,’ and I can’t wait until I get to call that frat boy my husband. Mike recently proposed in front of the Corner Room where we had our first date.”

Frank and Ashley

He is: Frank DelSignore, Class of 2004

She is: Ashley DelSignore, Class of 2004

They first met: At an 8 a.m. class in Forum. She says it wasn’t love at first sight — in fact, he dropped the class shortly after they first met.

What happened next: They met again at a party. “We both didn’t recognize each other because this time we were all groomed and properly dressed and awake,” she said. A few days later, Ashley asked her friend about Frank, only to learn that Frank had asked the same friend about her, too.

Now they’re: Married

And have been together for: More than 10 years

Their soundbite: “At our wedding, I secretly contacted the Penn State Creamery and had our two favorite flavors — Peachy Paterno (his) and WPSU Coffee Break (mine) — shipped in ginormous containers to our venue. I also contacted one of the stores in downtown State College to ship a bulk order of PSU shot glasses that were used to serve the ice cream.”

Stanley and Esther

He is: Stanley Eisman, Class of 1948

She is: Esther Eisman, Class of 1946

They first met: When he stepped off the bus from Lewistown at the Corner Room on March 10, 1946. He had been discharged from the Air Corp 10 days earlier, and was a second semester sophomore at the time. Waiting to greet him was a female acquaintance of his, who happened to bring along a sorority sister of hers. Before they parted, he asked her out on a date. She accepted.

What happened next: He gave her his fraternity pin in April, they were engaged in July, and were married over Christmas vacation. “We spent our honeymoon in New York, dodging my fraternity brothers,” Stanley says.

Now they’re: Married

And have been together: 66 years, expecting to celebrate their 67th anniversary on December 22, 2013. They have four grandchildren, three of whom are Penn State grads.

Their soundbite: “The Penn State experience throughout our lifetime has been a priceless one.”
