Penn State Women’s Soccer Defeats Ohio State, 4-2

Penn State’s 17th ranked women’s soccer team picked up its first win in three tries yesterday, defeating Ohio State, 4-2.

Penn State’s Taylor Schram had the first goal of the game in the fifth minute with an assist from sophomore Mallory Weber. It was Schram’s fourth goal on the season, and Weber’s fifth assist.

Ohio State almost responded in the nineteenth minute, but Penn State goalkeeper Britt Eckerstrom denied the Buckeyes to help the Lions maintain a one goal lead. Penn State extended its lead in the 33rd minute, when the Buckeyes scored an own goal.

Ohio State responded three minutes later to make it 2-1, and in the 53rd minute, Ohio State drew level off of a corner kick, making the game an even 2-2.

Maya Hayes answered quickly, intercepting an Ohio State pass inside the 18-yard box less then a minute later, beating the goalkeeper’s rush, and burying a shot from eight yards out.

Penn State’s All-American forward scored again three minutes later, giving Penn State a 4-2 lead that they would maintain for the rest of the match. The game was Hayes’s third multi-goal game this year, and she is now tied for second in the NCAA with 15 goals this season.

Ohio State’s defense held the Nittany Lions to its second lowest shot count of the season, with Penn State only attempting ten shots against a stingy Buckeye back line. However, the Nittany Lion defense was just as stout, holding Ohio State to nine shots on the night.

The Nittany Lions will close out their regular season at home on Sunday, hosting Illinois for Senior Day. The team will be honoring the seven seniors on the squad before the game. The matchup will kickoff at noon and will be live on the Big Ten Network.
