10 Questions With Marlin Groce

A few weeks ago, after Indiana beat Penn State 44-24, this video of a Penn State fan reacting to the game showed up on our radar and our Twitter feeds. His name is Marlin Groce, and his web show is called “Talkin’ Sports With Marlin.”

In the video, Marlin calls out everyone at Penn State, from the offensive line to defensive coordinator John Butler to Bill O’Brien. In retrospect, Marlin overreacted, but at the time, he had legitimate gripes across the board.

The video has 1,740 views, and is easily the most-viewed video on his channel. We caught up with Marlin to ask him about the video, his love of Penn State, and what he expects for the 2013 squad going forward.

Onward State: Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Marlin Groce: I’m Marlin Groce. I’m a 34-year-old, die hard Penn State fan! I work at the Atherton Hotel and I’m a sports blogger. My website is www.themarlinshow.com.

OS: Where did your love of Penn State come from?
MG: I was born a Penn State fan.
OS: Why start a YouTube channel?
MG: I was asked to start one to get my knowledge out there.
OS: Did you think Indiana had any chance against Penn State going into the game?
MG: I knew it would be a tough game because Indiana had a very potent offense, but they had a very poorly run defense that was dead last in the country. I thought we were going to run the ball and get about 200+ rushing yards against Indiana’s defense.
OS: How long after the game was that video filmed?
MG: Within three hours.
OS: In retrospect, do you think you overreacted?
MG: I overreacted a little bit. Still, I love Penn State no matter what!

OS: Is there anything you didn’t say in that video that you wish you had said?

MG: “We have survived more adversity than any other school in the country. We will get through this. We are Penn State!”

OS: You were very critical of Bill O’Brien and John Butler in your video. Do you stand by what you said?

MG: Yes, I still believe what I said in that video. They didn’t come to coach at all! But I still think highly of Bill O’Brien because of the way he handled the sanctions and everything else.

OS: What do you think are realistic expectations for Penn State football for the rest of this season?

MG: Realistically, I think this is a 7-5 team.

OS: Per Onward State tradition: if you could be one kind of dinosaur, what kind would you be and why?

MG: A T-Rex. I go for the throat!

Special thanks to Marlin’s producer/social media manager Gary Shawver for arranging the interview for us.
