John Urschel has another award to add to his growing collection this season. Earlier today, he was named a recipient of the National Football Foundation (NFF) Scholar-Athlete Award.

He was one of sixteen athletes selected from a nationwide pool of 171 semifinalists from all of the NCAA divisions and the NAIA. To be considered for this award, candidates had to be nominated by their schools, be in their last year of eligibility, have a grade point average of at least a 3.2, an outstanding football ability, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. The average GPA for the Scholar-Athlete Class was a 3.79 — Urschel brings that up a bit with his 4.0 — and all of the finalists were Academic All-Conference Athletes.

Past Scholar-Athletes include Steve Young, Doug Flutie, Tim Tebow, and Peyton and Eli Manning.

“This group should be extremely proud of their accomplishments, as they have undoubtedly distinguished themselves as some of the best football players and students in the country,” NFF Chairman Archie Manning said. “Each of these men is also a leader in his respective community, and we know that they have only begun to reach their potential.”

In December, each member of the 2013 National Scholar-Athlete Class will travel to New York City to be honored during the 56th NFF Annual Awards Dinner. They each will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship, and one member of the class will be chosen as the 24th recipient of the William V. Campbell Trophy for an additional $7,000, which recognizes an individual as the absolute best scholar-athlete in the nation.
