Better Know a Branch Campus: Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus

There are 24 campuses in the Penn State system. The one that gets the most attention is University Park, but what about the other 23? That’s where we come in with our newest 23 part series, Better Know a Branch Campus, inspired by Stephen Colbert’s Better Know a District. Next up: Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus.

Name: Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus. The Fightin’ Faes! Which, of course, means they are fightin’ half human, half fairy creatures.

Chancellor: Dr. Francis K. Achampong

Enrollment: 957 students, making it the 8th smallest branch campus in the Penn State system.

Location: Uniontown, Pennsylvania. Fayette is 57 miles from Pittsburgh, 147 miles from State College, and 279 miles from Philadelphia. The town closest to Fayette with a major university is Morgantown, West Virginia, which is 33 miles away. Celebrate a WVU reference by burning a couch.

Sports: Fayette is one of the schools that competes in the Penn State University Athletic Conference. There are seven teams at Fayette — baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, cross country, softball, women’s volleyball, and wrestling.

Fun Fact: Fayette is the one branch campus that doesn’t go by the “Nittany Lions” or the Lions.” Instead, Penn State Fayette is the “Roaring Lions.” Hey, listen, whatever makes you happy, guys. In much cooler news, Uniontown is where Ernie Davis, the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy, spent most of his childhood.

History: The campus first opened as an education center in 1934, but had to shut down due to World War II. The school became a fully integrated branch campus in 1965, and it has been in the Penn State system ever since. As for “The Eberly College” part, that happened in 2004, when natural gas speculator Robert Eberly endowed his fortune to higher education in Western Pennsylvania.

Right Now: There is no on-campus housing, but there is off-campus housing, if you’re into that sort of thing. At least there’s a cafeteria on campus, which is neat.

As for academics, there are ten associates degrees and five baccalaureate degrees offered at Fayette. There are also several certificate programs, most of which involve real estate.

Story Time: No stories this week, but I did get an email requesting a shout out to Fayette’s THON team. So here we go…

One thing worth mentioning about Fayette.. the Penn State Fayette THON team absolutely rocks at what they do. For the last 16 years, they’ve been among the top three money raising commonwealth campuses, receiving first place 12 of the last 16 years. The team raised over $93,000 last year alone, which is impressive considering the small campus size and meager student enrollment, as well as the fact that the campus is located in one of the poorest counties in the state.

Next Time: Penn State Greater Allegheny. It’s tiny. I don’t know much about it. Educate me.
