Hackenberg Wins Fourth Big Ten Freshman of the Week Honor

Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg added another accolade to his impressive freshman campaign today, winning his fourth Big Ten Freshman of the Week award this season after his performance against Nebraska Saturday. He is the first player since 2010 to win the award four times in a season.

Despite the overtime loss, Hackenberg completed 16-of-34 passes for 217 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for a touchdown on a beautiful bootleg that left him a wide open field to run in for the score untouched.

Hackenberg also posted his eighth 200-yard passing game this season, which puts him behind only Penn State greats Kerry Collins (10, 1994) and Matt McGloin (11, 2012) for most in a season. For the season, Hackenberg is 210-of-362 for 2,616 yards, with 16 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He is second in the Big Ten in completions (210) and passing yards (237.8 ypg) and fourth in total offense.

The freshman will look to add a fifth Freshman of the Week award this weekend when Penn State takes on Wisconsin in Madison at 3:30 EST.

Penn State’s first president Evan Pugh was born in 1828 at Jordan Bank Farm, three miles south of the city center of Oxford, Pennsylvania, an hour west of Philadelphia in Chester County. One-hundred eighty-nine years later, an Oxford brewery is honoring one of the preeminent champions of “liberal and practical” higher education in the form of a delicious Porter.
