Music Monday: This Week in Birthdays

For this week’s Music Monday, I selected seven songs from some legendary musicians with birthdays this week. These artists vary in musical backgrounds including rock, reggae, country, R&B, and hip-hop.

1.) Eric Clapton: This legendary guitarist and singer celebrated his 69th birthday on Sunday. Clapton has performed in a number of bands over his career including the Yardbirds, Cream, and Blind Faith. One of Clapton’s most famous songs, “Layla,” was written during his days with Derek and the Dominoes as a way to profess his love to Pattie Boyd, the wife of Beatles guitarist George Harrison at the time.

2.) Norah Jones also had a birthday yesterday. This 35-year-old singer-songwriter has been serenading fans since 2000 with five studio albums and collaborations with acts like the Foo Fighters, Willie Nelson, and Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong. Check out the title track from her debut album, Come Away With Me.

3.) Angus Young: AC/DC’s iconic lead guitarist turns 59 today. Young co-founded the band with his brother Malcolm back in 1973. To this day, the band continues to sell out arenas across the globe. Here is a classic gem from the band that features Young’s wild and immature — in a good way! — stage persona.

4.) Jimmy Cliff: Jamaican recording artist Jimmy Cliff will turn 66 tomorrow, April 1. This reggae singer is best known for his covers of “Wild World” by Cat Stevens and this popular version of Johnny Nash’s “I Can See Clearly Now.”

5.) Hillary Scott: The lead female singer of country band Lady Antebellum will celebrate her 28th birthday tomorrow. The band has been playing together since August 2006 and even visited Penn State back in 2012. Listen to Lady Antebellum’s single “Wanted You More” from their 2011 album, Own The Night.

6.) Marvin Gaye: Though the R&B singer’s birthday is on April 2, one cannot overlook the 30th anniversary of Marvin Gaye’s death, the day before his 45th birthday. On April 1, 1984, Gaye was shot by his father while the singer was sitting and talking with his mother. He was pronounced dead at California Hospital Medical Center, and his ashes were scattered near the Pacific Ocean.

7.) Pharrell Williams: Would you be surprised if I told you that Pharrell is turning 41 on Saturday? Well believe it or not, it’s true. I thought about choosing one of this hip-hop artist’s newest singles, or even one of the many songs he produced, but I ultimately decided to pay homage to his group N.E.R.D. and their 2002 album, In Search Of…
