UPUA Announces Special Student Overnight Parking Policy For Finals Week

Penn State University Transportation Services, in collaboration with UPUA, announced the introduction of a special student overnight parking policy that will be implemented during finals week.

Beginning on May 2 at 2 a.m. until 4 a.m. on May 8, student parking passes will be valid until 4 a.m. This extension is two hours longer than the normal parking pass limit, which ends at 2 a.m. in most lots. Student parking will be available in all lots usually permitted to student permit holders after 4 p.m., with the two exceptions being Lot Green H and the HUB Parking Deck.

This initiative seeks to aid students who will be studying extra hours on campus overnight over the course of finals week.

Those students who are not registered for a student parking permit but still wish to park on campus during finals week will be able to purchase a one-week parking permit from the Parking Office. Students living off campus who will be commuting to campus will be able to purchase a one-week commuter permit for $5. Off-campus students looking for 24 hour campus parking will be able to purchase a one-week permit for Lot 83 East for $18.

Resident students will have the option of purchasing either a one-week permit for Lot 82 for $20, or a permit for Lot 83 for $15. In addition to the standard privileges that come with these permits, students who purchase one of these temporary permits will also be allowed to park during finals week from 2:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. in authorized lots.

“The UPUA is extremely excited to partner with Transportation Services to resolve parking issues faced by students at Penn State University Park,” said UPUA President Anand Ganjam. “We believe that the extension of parking hours for students during finals week as well as the provisions for students to purchase parking passes just for that week will be extremely beneficial to all those who commute to campus. We look forward to developing a long term partnership with Transportation Services so that we can continue to identify and improve issues facing student parking and transportation.”

Ryan Givens, the Assistant Director of Transportation Services, was happy to help collaborate with UPUA on the initiative.

“We in Transportation Services realize the importance of students being able to focus on their projects/finals during finals week and also understand that many students put in long and late hours in classrooms, labs and the library during this time period,” said Givens. “We are excited to collaborate and partner with the UPUA to offer extended parking hours for students during finals week and also provide a low cost option for students that currently do not have a parking pass that want to take advantage of the extended parking hours. Additionally, we look forward to this finals week initiative being just the beginning of a more active relationship between Transportation Services, UPUA and other student organizations. We wish all students the best as they head into finals weeks and congratulations to those students that are about to graduate.”

Visit the Parking Office during normal business hours (7:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday) to register. Students should be sure to come with both their Penn State ID and license plate number for the vehicle that will be registered. Payments can be made via cash, check or money order, major credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover), and LionCash+, or the amount can be charged to the student’s bursar account.
