Rabid Fox Attacks Woman; Second Fox Spotted

By Jenn Miller

Officials in Harris Township, where Boalsburg is located, issued an alert Monday saying the gray fox that attacked a woman in the township last week was rabid and say that a second gray fox exhibiting similar behavior was witnessed in the township.

The incident occurred about 9 p.m. on June 9 when a gray fox attacked a woman in a residential area on Andover Drive in Harris Township. Police say neighbors captured the fox and an officer was forced to kill the animal.

The remains were then turned over to the Pennsylvania Game Commission for examination. Harris Township officials said in an alert Monday that the gray fox tested positive for rabies.

Officials say there have been unconfirmed reports that the second fox was spotted recently in the Hill Neighborhood. Officials urged residents to use caution, seek shelter and call State College police at 814-234-7150 if they witness a gray fox.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission could not immediately be reached for comment Monday.
