Record 136 Penn State Student-Athletes Selected As Academic All-Big Ten Honorees

Penn State student-athletes have been known for their accomplishments both on and off the field. Today, that continued: A record 136 spring and at-large sport student-athletes were named Academic All-Big Ten honorees.

This is the third of this year’s Big Ten academic announcements, bringing Penn State’s yearly total up to 285 for its second-best mark ever (the record is 296, set in 2012-13). Overall, the Big Ten sported 1,216 spring and at-large sport student athletes.

The women’s track and field team accounted for 21 of the 136 Academic All-Big Ten honorees, while the men produced 13 honorees. The men’s baseball team produced 15, while men’s and women’s lacrosse had 13 and 15 honorees, respectively. Emily Giannotti, Katie Rodden (women’s track and field), and Lindsay Riehl (women’s ice hockey) finished off the year with perfect 4.0 GPAs, tied for the most in the Big Ten with Michigan State.

These numbers are in addition to the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-American honors that former guard John Urschel, wrestling star David Taylor, and women’s volleyball middle hitter Katie Slay earned this past fall. Penn State consistently ranks as one of the most successful institutions when it comes to athletic and academic success. Some of its impressive 2013-14 marks include 468 of its student-athletes recording a 3.0 GPA or higher, 197 making the Dean’s List, and 88 percent graduating.

Congratulations to the honorees!
