U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team To Include Two Nittany Lions

Now that the men’s World Cup has wrapped up, national soccer attention shifts to the women, and Penn State is set to soon be represented on the national stage in women’s competitions.

Penn State’s own Brittany Basinger and incoming freshman Rose Chandler will compete on the U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team, head coach Michelle French announced. The ladies will compete with the team at the 2014 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada in August.

Chandler is making her U-20 debut, while Basinger, a sophomore, will appear on the roster for a second time. Basinger won the CONCACAF Championship in 2014 with the U-20 WNT. She had a familiar face with her during the tournament, as her head coach at Penn State, Erica Walsh, is an assistant coach on the U.S. U-20 WNT staff.

The roster announcement came after a weeklong training session with the U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team in Seattle. Penn State is one of three universities with two or more players represented on the U-20 roster.

Fellow Nittany Lion Raquel Rodriguez, a junior, was already named a member of the Costa Rican Women’s National Team and will play in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Incoming freshmen Emily Ogle also earned an invitation to a U.S. U-18 WNT training camp in Mexico City, which is happening this week with a focus on the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in South Africa.
