Tailgreat may be canceled for the 2014 football season, but a new pregame band show will occur before Penn State’s Sept. 20 matchup against the University of Massachusetts.

The university’s Athletics Department and the Penn State Blue Band introduced the Unrivaled Band Jam, in which high school bands will play with the Blue Band and UMass marching band in the Bryce Jordan Center prior to kickoff.

“The Blue Band looks forward to combining with the UMass Minuteman Band and high school bands from Pennsylvania to add to the gameday experience for Nittany Lion fans on September 20,” said Dr. O. Richard Bundy, the Blue Band’s director, in the press release.

Interested high school bands can sign up prior to Sept. 5, by calling 1-800-NITTANY.

About a week ago, the Athletics Department decided to axe the popular Tailgreat show, during which the Blue Band performed in the Bryce Jordan Center before home football games, then ceremoniously marched into Beaver Stadium. A Blue Band source said that the $70,000 annual price tag for the Tailgreat show was deemed too expensive by athletics.
